Emerging Face of RIA
It seems the RIA will become even richer with the release of Apollo.
Adobe is posing it as the "cross-operating system runtime ... to build and deploy RIAs to the desktop".
This means three things
1.The application can function offline
2.It will have access to file system
3.The same application will function in multiple operating systems
The question of possibility ?
Adobe claims with Flex this is possible. It is not the first attempt to bridge browser with desktop. The aim was taken by Macromedia with the release of Central. But central was not every coder's cup of tea.May be the thing is that Central required Flash which has not been designed with the developer in mind.So Central did not cause a storm as expected.
So the option to create another 'Flash for Developer' app seemed viable. And thus Flex took birth.Though it took another round with Adobe involved to reach what it is now.
Flex provides just the right environment for enterprise level application developement.
Once the browser is won, Apollo will be there to take it to the next level.
How far will it be successful?
Success of any technology depends heavily on adoption.Flex is being marketed around RIA and to make things exciting Microsoft is joining as a competitor. This means RIA is here to stay.So the next logical step is to take it to the desktop.Add to it cross operating system tag.Voila you have got a winner.
eBay is already experimenting is news enough(View the article by Ryan Stewart).
Good going for everyone in technology. It seems to be a win-win situation.
